Who is the Rock in your life? Do you have a firm foundation with the ability to hold you secure and keep you upright even in the midst of the most severe storm? Jesus proclaims, “everyone who hears my words and obeys them will be like a wise man who built his house upon a rock. The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, but it did not fall down, for it was built on the rock. But everyone who hears my words and does not obey them will be like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand. The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew and struck that house, and it fell, and its destruction was complete” (Matt 7:24–27 ULB). What does that look like in your life? Do you apply the Word to your life? Is the Word, who became flesh (John 1:14) the Rock through which you develop your worldview?

Who is Christ to you? Jesus asked His disciples this very question. “When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, ‘Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?’ They said, ‘Some say that You are John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter replied, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it’” (Matt 16:13-18 MEV). Praise be to God!! Christ is our Rock! Build your life on the Rock.

Christ is our life sustainer

Who is Christ to you? Is He the cornerstone? Who was Christ Jesus to Peter? Let us hear well his argument: “Rid yourselves of all evil, all lying, hypocrisy, jealousy, and evil speech.  As newborn babies want milk, you should want the pure and simple teaching. By it you can mature in your salvation, because you have already examined and seen how good the Lord is. Come to the Lord Jesus, the ‘stone’ that lives. The people of the world did not want this stone, but he was the stone God chose, and he was precious. You also are like living stones, so let yourselves be used to build a spiritual temple—to be holy priests who offer spiritual sacrifices to God. He will accept those sacrifices through Jesus Christ. The Scripture says: ‘I will put a stone in the ground in Jerusalem. Everything will be built on this important and precious rock. Anyone who trusts in him will never be disappointed’ Isaiah 28:16. This stone is worth much to you who believe. But to the people who do not believe, ‘the stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone’ Psalm 118:22. Also, he is ‘a stone that causes people to stumble, a rock that makes them fall’ Isaiah 8:14. They stumble because they do not obey what God says, which is what God planned to happen to them. But you are a chosen people, royal priests, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession. You were chosen to tell about the wonderful acts of God, who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light” (1 Pet 2:1-9 NCV). Peter pearl strings the Scripture with convincing evidence that Christ is the Living Rock that calls us into His marvelous light. Praise be to God!!!

Paul also professes Christ to be the Rock. “I do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea. All were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food. All drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from a spiritual rock that followed them, and that rock was Christ” (1 Cor 10:1–4 ULB). And let us never forget “the last words of David…’ The LORD’s Spirit spoke through me…The God of Israel spoke; the Rock of Israel said to me: ‘Whoever rules fairly over people, who rules with respect for God, is like the morning light at dawn, like a morning without clouds. He is like sunshine after a rain that makes the grass sprout from the ground’” (2 Sam 23:1-4 NCV). Christ is our Living Rock and firm foundation. Build your house upon the Rock, who is Jesus Christ, and you will stand through all the storms of life. Truly, the gates of Hades will not be able to prevail against you. To God be the glory!! Amen.
