“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning” (John 1:1-2 NIV). “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14 NIV). The mystery in all of this is great, but I love just simply resting in it – not fully understanding in my finite wisdom and abilities, but yet fully trusting God in His infinite wisdom and abilities. I fully understand my limitedness. I embrace the mysteries of the Bible and find full confidence in His words: “My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways…As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isa 55:8-9 NIV). I love knowing that my God is sovereign and His thoughts and ways will be at times way beyond my limited comprehension. Praise be to God for His ultimate wisdom!

Studying the Word

So, let us dig into the Scripture and learn from Him what we can of this mystery that Christ Jesus is the Word of God. We know that He is the Word, and we know like Peter, He holds the words for eternal life. Many fell away when Jesus was teaching that He is “the bread of life…the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world” (John 6:35-63a NIV). Jesus explained: “The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life. Yet there are some of you who do not believe.’ For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. He went on to say, ‘This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.’ From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him” (John 6:63b-66 NIV). Listen to the words Peter proclaimed when Jesus asked them if they were going to leave too. “You do not want to leave too, do you?’ Jesus asked the Twelve. Simon Peter answered him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God’” (John 6:67-69 NIV). Peter believed Jesus was from God and held the words of eternal life. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning…The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1:1-14 NIV). Praise be to God!! Is this mystery too great for you? Do you believe in the Holy One of God, who is the Word and holds the words of eternal life?

Studying the Word

Let us listen to the words of the psalmist: “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (Ps 119:105 NIV). “How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Praise be to you, LORD; teach me your decrees. With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth. I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word” (Ps 119:9-16 NIV). Do we meditate on His word? Do we delight in His decrees?

Studying the Word

Do we seek understanding? “Cause me to understand the way of your precepts, that I may meditate on your wonderful deeds. My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word. Keep me from deceitful ways; be gracious to me and teach me your law. I have chosen the way of faithfulness; I have set my heart on your laws. I hold fast to your statutes, LORD; do not let me be put to shame. I run in the path of your commands, for you have broadened my understanding. Teach me, LORD, the way of your decrees, that I may follow it to the end. Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart. Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight. Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word” (Ps 119:27-37 NIV).

Studying the Word

Do we trust in His Word? Is our hope found in His Word? Is it truly a lamp for our feet and a light for our path? “How I long for your precepts! In your righteousness preserve my life. May your unfailing love come to me, LORD, your salvation, according to your promise; then I can answer anyone who taunts me, for I trust in your word. Never take your word of truth from my mouth, for I have put my hope in your laws” (Ps 119:40-43 NIV). “May those who fear you rejoice when they see me, for I have put my hope in your word” (Ps 119:74 NIV). “My soul faints with longing for your salvation, but I have put my hope in your word” (Ps 119:81 NIV). “Your word, Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens” (Ps 119:89 NIV). “Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long. Your commands are always with me and make me wiser than my enemies. I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes. I have more understanding than the elders, for I obey your precepts. I have kept my feet from every evil path so that I might obey your word. I have not departed from your laws, for you yourself have taught me. How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! I gain understanding from your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path. Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (Ps 119:97-105 NIV). “You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word” (Ps 119:114 NIV). “The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple” (Ps 119:130 NIV). “Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me” (Ps 119:133 NIV). “I rise before dawn and cry for help; I have put my hope in your word…Long ago I learned from your statutes that you established them to last forever” (Ps 119:147-152 NIV). “All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal” (Ps 119:160 NIV). Jesus holds “the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God” (John 6:68-69 NIV). Praise be to God!!!

Studying the Word

Christ Jesus is the Word of God. “I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God” (Rev 19:11-13 NIV). “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning…The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1:1-14 NIV). And in the end – “The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. ‘He will rule them with an iron scepter.’ He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS” (Rev 19:14-16 NIV). Jesus Christ is “the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End” (Rev 22:13 NIV). KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS – THE WORD OF GOD!!! To God be the glory!!! Hallelujah!!! Amen.
